Abstract

Objective: The aim of this research was to study about the efficiency of tongue cleaning with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate on oral levels of Volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs).

Methods: Simple random sampling crossover study, healthy 30 subjects had 2 morning appointments each with a waiting period of 2 weeks between appointments. At each appointment, the subject used a single standardized tongue cleaning procedure using tooth brush with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate for experimental and with water for control. Monitored the subjects oral VSCs values using an Oral Chroma?; hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) and dimethyl sulfide ((CH3)2S); for baseline, immediately after cleaning and experimental intervention time at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 minutes.

Results: The baseline values showed no significant difference between 2 groups. Cleaning the tongue with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate significantly higher reduced H2S levels immediately after cleaned (68.5%) than with water (35.8%) (p£¼0.05). Mechanical tongue cleaning with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate had statistically significantly lower H2S values and a higher percentage of H2S reduction than did with water up to 50 minutes after tongue cleaning (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion: Tongue cleaning with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate has more efficiency in reducing oral VSCs level (H2S only).
